Master of Science in Energy Management

This is an international Master of Science programme based on international cooperation between the Business School (Norway) and its partner university MGIMO in Russia.

The first semester focuses on business administration and management theory, with the aim of broadening students' understanding of the energy sector's eclectic nature. The first year focuses on developing proficiency in constructive use of theory, at the same time as fostering active attitudes towards the management of strategic business processes. There is an additional focus on major environmental, philosophical, and ethical issues related to business and the energy industry. Courses are provided at the Business School, University of Nordland, campus Bodø.

The second semester advances theoretical and contextual knowledge in business and energy-related topics. Global and Norwegian contexts will be a common theme throughout the semester, as will issues related to world oil markets, government relations and the environment. The research methods course during this semester helps students prepare for thesis work later on in the programme. Courses are provided at the Business School, campus Bodø. Students from MGIMO University in Russia take courses during this semester jointly with programme students in Bodø.

The third semester aims to help students deepen and assimilate their new knowledge of theory and method. Class activities are designed to improve the students' knowledge about the international business environment in the energy sector, the issues of risk and downstream management, organization and commodity exchange and trade, transport and logistics. Courses for this semester for the joint class of students on the programme at University of Nordland and MGIMO are provided by MGIMO University, in Moscow (Russia). Some of the courses in this semester also cover understanding the Russian business environment, history and the role of Russia in global energy supply.

The fourth semester focuses on writing and completing the master thesis. Students can use opportunities to write their thesis at our partner institutions, for instance at University of Alberta (Canada) and University of Texas (USA).

Study progression requirement

The student must have completed a minimum of 45 credits in the first year to be allowed to attend courses in the third semester. Prior to starting work on the Master thesis, the student must have successfully completed the Scientific Methods course and completed the mandatory exhange semester.

Formal prerequisites Bachelor's degree or equivalent three/four years of financial and administrative studies. The following requirements for the combination of subjects applies:

A total of 90 credits comprising:

a minimum of 30 credits of business: management accounting, financial accounting, finance and investment
a minimum of 25 credits administration subjects: organization, marketing, strategy and management
a minimum of 15-20 credits economics: microeconomics, macroeconomics, public finance
a minimum of 15-20 credits methodology: mathematics, statistics, scientific method
Admission requires a good result (laudabilis), ie an average grade of minimum C in the admission basis. For international students minimum 2nd Class, Upper Division/B or equivivalent is required.

Students who are not native speakers of English, must document knowledge of English with one of the following tests:
•TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 550 points on the paper-based test or 80 points on the Internet-based test
•IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum score of 6.0
