Language Requirements

Below you will find an overview of the language requirements for Brazilian students applying for courses where the language of instruction is English or Norwegian. Please note that the requirements listed below are general. The institutions may have additional requirements for certain programmes.

:: English-taught programmes
Applicants from Brazil normally have to document their proficiency in English, but may be exempted from the English language test if they have:
1) Studied English as their first foreign language over a period of minimum 7 years at compulsory/upper secondary school. The applicants must document this or provide proof of having taken a recognised examination/test. In exceptional cases, applicants may provide proof of English proficiency in other ways.
2) Obtained a Bachelor’s degree with English as the language of instruction
3) Passed an A-level examination in English. Applicants who cannot meet the English language requirements may present one of the following tests or exams:
> Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 (paper based) or 170 (computer based).
> International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum score of 5.0.
> Advanced Placement International English Language examination (APIEL) with a minimum score of 3.0.
> Universities of Cambridge/Oxford: - First Certificate in English - Certificate in Advanced English - Certificate of Proficiency Additionally, you meet the requirements for English language competence if you have:
> Completed one year of studies at the university level in an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA) where the language of instruction is English.
> Completed studies at university level with a major in English. All applications should be submitted directly to the institution concerned. A complete list of the Norwegian universities and university colleges can be found on page 22. Please note that for Bachelor’s programmes, knowledge of Norwegian is usually also required.

:: Norwegian as language of instruction
For courses where the language of instruction is Norwegian, proficiency in the Norwegian language will be required. The Norwegian language is the primary language of instruction at Norwegian institutions of higher education. Some foreign students learn Norwegian before they continue with further studies in Norway.
Below you will find an overview of the language requirements for foreign students applying for courses where the language of instruction is Norwegian. If applying for a course taught in Norwegian, or for general acceptance into an institution, applicants from Brazil must meet one of the following requirements:
Successfully passed 'Norwegian as a second language' from upper secondary school.
Sucessfully passed Level 3 in Norwegian at a university.
Successfully passed one-year study in Norwegian language and society for foreign students from a university college.
Successfully passed test in Norwegian at higher level, 'Bergenstesten', with a minimum score of 450. In certain cases, institutions may accept other types of documentation. Please contact your institution directly for details.
