Study at the University of Stavanger
Our vision is “to challenge established facts, explore the unknown, gain insight and find wisdom, to benefit society at large and our students and staff.”

In order to realise this vision, we need staff, students and people around us who are curious and hungry for knowledge. We are convinced that a collective commitment to this ambitious vision will help us produce wiser individuals who will be better equipped to meet the future and everyday challenges.

UiS, like all Norwegian higher education institutions, has implemented measures dictated by the Quality Reform. The two main reasons for the reform are achieving improved quality in higher education and research and following up the Bologna's process and Norway's obligations in that regard.

Programme description

Water is life. This incredible chemical with its numerous anomalies is the fundamental nutrient and ecosystem component for all living organisms.

The University of Stavanger offers a Master of Science in Environmental Technology. The programme incorporates two streams of specialisation – Offshore Environmental Engineering and Water Science and Technology.
We aim to provide motivated students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible water managers and engineers.

Students who want to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry, or among the many offshore related service and research companies, are offered a spesialisation in OFFSHORE ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING. The philosophy is to combine courses in offshore oil and gas exploration, production technologies and environmental management. This spesialisation is suited for students who are interested in practical technological and administrative techniques for sound environmental management in the offshore industries. Successful candidates will qualify for key positions in environmental engineering and management.

WATER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY is offered to students who want to specialise in aquatic chemistry and ecology, and technologies for water and wastewater treatment. This more natural science and research based programme seeks to provide students with fundamental and advanced insight into aquatic chemistry, environmental biotechnology and water process engineering, and will also give a good basis for students working with water based petroleum production chemistry.

Our approach is to use fundamental mass and energy balance approaches for design and operation of water and wastewater processing technologies. We encourage students to see available technologies in relation to the ecological mechanisms of receiving environments.

Successful candidates qualify for positions in governmental and private research institutions, public and private environmental management and technical consultants, and as environmental engineers within the industry.
