Biomaterials for functional tissue reconstruction
This program offers an international and interdisciplinary learning environment, inviting you to explore how materials interact with human biology, how tissues can be reconstructed or repaired, and how medical devices are designed, developed, assessed, and regulated.
You will gain advanced knowledge of biomaterials, tissue engineering, and medical technologies, together with an understanding of how new healthcare solutions progress from research and preclinical evaluation to clinical application. Through laboratory-based learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and exposure to innovation and regulatory processes, the programme prepares you for careers in research, industry, and healthcare innovation.
About the programme
This Master's programme provides advanced scientific and practical training in biomaterials and regenerative medicine. It is designed for students who wish to deepen their understanding of biomaterials and their application in tissue repair, regeneration, and medical technologies. The programme also provides insight into innovation processes, regulatory requirements, and the broader societal implications of emerging healthcare technologies.
As a student you will gain in-depth knowledge of:
- biomaterials fabrication, characterisation, and testing
- tissue engineering principles and regenerative approaches
- cell – material interactions in 2- and 3- dimensional (2D, 3D) environments
- biocompatibility, host responses, and biomaterial evaluation
- medical device development and regulatory pathways
- emerging technologies in biomaterials and regenerative medicine
The programme emphasises problem-based learning, laboratory training, and interdisciplinary teamwork, enabling students to develop both a strong theoretical foundation and practical research skills.
Distinctive features
The programme includes several innovative elements designed to support students’ academic and professional development.
Biocompatibility Assessment as a cornerstone
Understanding how biomaterials interact with cells and tissues is fundamental to the development of safe and effective medical technologies. In this course, students explore the biological mechanisms underlying biocompatibility and gain practical experience with laboratory methods used to evaluate cellular and tissue responses. The course also introduces international standards and testing frameworks for the assessment of biomaterials and medical devices, linking experimental research with regulatory requirements.
Second semester – preparation for Master's thesis research
Students begin developing the scientific foundation for their Master's thesis through a dedicated course co-developed by the Faculty of Dentistry and the University of Oslo Library’s Research Support Services. The course provides training in advanced literature searching, critical appraisal of scientific evidence, and academic writing, helping students prepare for independent research.
Final year – Master’s thesis research
In the final year, students undertake an independent research project within an active research environment. Projects are conducted in collaboration with research groups at the Faculty of Dentistry and may involve interdisciplinary cooperation with other faculties, research institutions, healthcare services, or external partners. Through their thesis work, students gain experience in research design, data collection and analysis, scientific communication, and independent problem-solving, preparing them for doctoral studies as well as research- and innovation-oriented careers.
Study environment and student life
We know that students who thrive are more successful in their studies and scientific and personal development. We therefore focus on the wellbeing of students.
The first week of the master studies is designed to welcome you to our faculty, with scientific presentations and lectures, including presentation of master thesis topics. You will also receive practical information relevant to your studies and get to know those in charge of the program, those in charge of the initial courses, and those that are available for answering administrative and practical questions in relation to your studies. You will also be acquainted with your fellow master students, also those ahead of you in the program, and with employees of the department, both professionally and socially. Participation this first week is mandatory. If you have practical questions in relation to the master studies, please contact the faculty
The University of Oslo has a rich student life, with more than 200 student associations. We encourage our students to engage socially. As a student, you will have access to pleasant student areas, both for studies and social activities, in close association with the research communities.
Career Opportunities
Graduates develop highly sought-after analytical, technical, and interdisciplinary skills that prepare them for careers across academia, healthcare, biotechnology, and medical technology sectors.
