Classical Studies

This program offers advanced knowledge of Ancient Greek or Latin through the reading and interpretation of original texts in various genres and from different periods. Additionally, it expands your understanding of ancient culture and its receptions.

Choose between Greek and Latin

You may opt to pursue either the Greek or Latin track, focusing on the language of your choice from linguistic, literary, and cultural perspectives.

Our master’s program offers a comprehensive understanding of either Ancient Greek or Latin. Compared to your undergraduate studies, you will acquire a more profound knowledge of the language of your choice and its cultural contexts through our specialized courses and your thesis project. Additionally, you will gain a broad overview of the field by engaging with a diverse range of texts.

Get to Know Research in Classics!

Classical philology is a vast research field that encompasses the entirety of Greco-Roman antiquity and its receptions. A key aspect of our program is to familiarize students with ongoing research in Greek and Latin language and literature by developing their own master’s thesis and collaborating closely with our committed instructors and researchers.

Learn from our Skilled Researchers

Our Classics instructors are highly proficient researchers with extensive knowledge in various areas within classical philology. They oversee their own research projects and participate in research groups and projects on both national and international scales. As a master’s student, you have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into these research groups and sometimes even participate directly in their work.

Participate in our Academic Forum

All of our students are encouraged to attend the Classics Seminar, our regular academic gathering. At the seminar, both our researchers and students present their ongoing projects, exchange ideas, and receive feedback and suggestions to enhance their work. Additionally, we frequently invite outstanding researchers from Norway and other countries to share their insights at the seminar.

Explore the Papyrus Collection - the Largest Collection of Greek Papyri in the Nordic Countries

Did you know that the University Library of Oslo houses the biggest collection of Greek papyri in the Nordic countries? The collection primarily consists of literary papyri and documents in Ancient Greek, along with a few Latin documents. These are actively used in our teaching and can be the subject of your master’s thesis.

Internship during your Studies

Employers highly value candidates who have obtained practical work experience during their studies. In our programme, you can enroll in a 10-credit internship course that provides valuable opportunities to work with relevant archives, libraries, and publishers both in Norway and abroad.
