Why study Systems Engineering?
Systems engineering is a recognized method of developing systems in aerospace, maritime, healthcare, energy, communication, and manufacturing. A master's degree in Systems Engineering qualifies and equips you to lead and innovate in the creation of complex products, systems, and services.
This part-time programme is worth 90 credits. It consists of four mandatory subjects, four elective subjects and one master thesis. Systems Engineering can also be taken as single courses.
This master's degree will give you the title Master in Systems Engineering (Experience-based).
What is Systems Engineering?
The System Engineering perspective is based on systems thinking, considering a system as a combination of system elements. Systems thinking occurs through discovery, learning, diagnosis, and dialog that lead to sensing, modeling, and talking about the real-world to better understand, define, and work with systems.
A systems thinker knows how systems fit into the larger context of day-to-day life, how they behave, and how to manage them.
What you will learn
Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary master’s degree programme that focuses on how to design and manage complex systems throughout the life cycle of products. Systems engineering is the ultimate tool for the rapid conversion of knowledge into competitive products and services.
This master’s programme consists of systems engineering courses and elective courses. Your choice of specialization subjects will depend on your professional background, current job, employer’s demands and your prospective career.
Structure of the programme
This programme is designed for people who already have a job and want to take a master’s degree while working. You can decide the pace yourself. We are not concerned with any agreement you may have reached with your employer about classes, studying and assignments. It is sufficient that you attend classes and submit assignments on time.
All tuition is arranged as intensive sessions. The systems engineering subjects consist of one week of intensive instruction, followed by ten weeks for working on a project assignment. In addition to attending the intensive sessions, you must set aside time for completing project assignments.
The master thesis will be linked to development projects in the company where you work. At least six months of the programme will be allocated to you for completing your master’s project.
With a master degree consisting of 90 credits does not qualify you to further study at PhD level. PhD study requires a Master degree consisting of 120 credits.
Fees
Each course costs NOK 25 000, which includes:
- Registration and supervision
- Examination fees
The Master Project course, worth 30 ECTS, costs NOK 42 000. If you want to take a module without an examination, it will cost NOK 20 000 per course.
NB. In order to be awarded credits, you must submit and pass the written assignment.
