Informatics: Language Technology (master)

Learn how computers can make sense of human language. Through this study programme, you will get advanced training in the discipline called human language technology or natural language processing, combining skills from computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and linguistics.

Language technology is one of the most important areas of modern artificial intelligence research. From large language models and chatbots, to machine translation, search engines, and tools for analysing large text collections, language technology is changing how we communicate, work, and access knowledge.

In this programme, you will learn how such technologies work — and how to develop, apply, evaluate, and improve them. You will gain both practical skills and theoretical understanding of the methodologies used in natural language processing and machine learning, combined with insight into linguistics and how human language is structured and used.

By studying language technology, you will acquire expertise that is increasingly sought after in research, industry, and the public sector: the ability to build systems that can generate and analyse human language.

Organization and Study Environment

The master's programme consists of both coursework and a thesis. Students submit a so-called “long thesis” (i.e., 60 ECTS), with regular supervision by one or more members of the Language Technology Group, an international NLP research group at the Department of Informatics. All classes are offered in English. Some courses are obligatory parts of the programme, others can be selected freely in consultation with your supervisor.

The master's students have access to a dedicated study room for the programme on the 4th floor of Ole-Johan Dahls hus, where the supervisors and researchers in the Language Technology Group also have their offices.
